私たちが、隠岐の「案内人」である理由。
隠岐諸島への旅は、単なる景勝地巡りではありません。 目の前に広がる風景は、数万年、数億年という地球のドラマが積み重なって生まれた「奇跡の結果」そのものだからです。
大地が動き、植物が闘い、その恵みに感謝した人が祈りを捧げる。 この島に息づく壮大な物語を、私たちは「hotelのち」「喫茶ゆらぎ」という場を通して、皆様にお手渡ししたいと考えています。
剥き出しの大地が強いた、必然の共生。
かつてユーラシア大陸の一部だったこの場所は、日本列島の形成とともに大陸から引き裂かれ、一度は深い海の底へと沈みました。 その後、約600万年前の火山活動と、大地を押し上げる隆起によって、再び海上に姿を現したのが現在の隠岐諸島です。
島前は巨大なカルデラ噴火の跡地、島後は火山と古い地層が複雑に入り組んだ島。 共通しているのは、平地が極端に少なく、海から山がそそり立つような急峻な地形であることです。雨が降れば栄養分ごと土が流れてしまう岩場や斜面。一見、緑豊かに見える隠岐ですが、その足元は、植物にとって決して優しくない 安住できない土地 なのです。
しかし、この 地形の厳しさ と、氷河期に大陸と陸続きだった 歴史 こそが、隠岐を世界でも稀な生態系へと変えました。
その象徴が、隠岐の 杉 です。 氷河期の寒冷化により、日本の多くの場所から姿を消した杉。しかし、対馬暖流の影響で適度な湿り気が保たれた隠岐は、彼らにとって絶好の 避難所（リフュージア） となりました。数万年前の古い遺伝子を今に繋ぐ隠岐の杉は、いわばタイムカプセルのような存在です。
本来なら出会うはずのない、北国と南国の植物たちが、この狭い島でひしめき合って生きている。 北海道を象徴するハマナス（自生の南限）が咲く一方で、沖縄由来のナゴラン（北限）が木々に着生する。この不思議な 混在 も、杉が守られてきた特殊な気候条件があればこそです。
生存をかけて形を変え、命を繋いできた植物たち。 剥き出しの自然の中で、それぞれが必然的に選んだ生存戦略が、この島独自の濃密な共生関係を形作っています。
黒曜石から始まる、人の営みと祈り。
植物だけでなく、人もまた、この火山の島がもたらした恩恵に引き寄せられてきました。 その象徴が、3万年以上前の太古より人々を魅了し続けた 黒曜石 です。
激しい火山活動の最中、噴出した溶岩が急速に冷やされることで生まれる天然のガラス、黒曜石。隠岐のそれは不純物が少なく、割ればカミソリよりも鋭い刃先を持つ極めて質の高いものでした。まだ金属を持たなかった人類にとって、隠岐の黒曜石は生存を支える「最先端のテクノロジー」であり、富の象徴でもあったのです。
人々はこの 黒い宝石 を求め、丸木舟で荒波を越え、この島へと辿り着きました。隠岐を中心に、遠くロシアや九州まで広がる巨大な交易路が築かれた事実は、隠岐がいかに古くから世界と繋がっていたかを示しています。
その後、隠岐は大陸文化の交差点として、また アワビ などの海産物を都へ送る宝庫として、朝廷と深く結びつきます。後鳥羽上皇をはじめとする貴人が配流されたのも、単に遠方だからではなく、王者を迎えるに足る 重厚な歴史と文化、そして世界と繋がる海路がこの地にあったからです。
長い時の中で消えてしまった記録も数知れません。 しかし、現代まで途切れることなく続く 祭り や 神事 の中に、その答えは残されています。神楽の舞や、神輿の掛け声こそが、3万年の営みを伝える 生きた証言 なのです。
「お借りしている力」を、未来へ還すために。
私たち 合同会社nochi が、この地で商いを行えるのは、私たちが優れているからではありません。 先人たちが築き、守り抜いてきた「隠岐」という偉大な資産の力を、お借りしているに過ぎないのです。
だからこそ、私たちは単なる宿泊や飲食の提供者には留まりません。 隠岐の歴史を学び、今の暮らしを見つめ、その価値をお客様一人ひとりに合わせて翻訳して手渡す「案内人」でありたい。
今回、私たちが作成した「隠岐諸島 神事・祭りカレンダー」は、その気持ちの一つです。 観光パンフレットには載らない小さな集落の祈りまでを網羅したこの記録は、隠岐の深淵へのヒントになります。
3万年の記憶の最先端に立ち、新しい賑わいを灯すこと。 それが、お借りしている力への最大の感謝であり、私たちの使命です。

Why We Are Your “Guides” to Oki.
Traveling to the Oki Islands is more than just a tour of scenic spots. The landscapes before you are a “miraculous result” born from hundreds of millions of years of Earth’s drama. The earth shifted, plants struggled for survival, and people offered prayers in gratitude for its blessings. Through “hotel nochi” and “kissa yuragi,” we aim to translate and deliver the grand narrative of these islands to you.
A Natural Symbiosis Born from a Harsh Landscape
Once part of the Eurasian continent, this land was torn away during the formation of the Japanese archipelago, sinking deep beneath the sea. Approximately 6 million years ago, volcanic activity and crustal uplift brought Oki back to the surface. The Dozen islands are the remains of a massive caldera, while Dogo is a complex mix of volcanic rock and ancient strata. One commonality is the steep terrain, where mountains rise directly from the sea. When it rains, the soil and nutrients are washed away from the rocky slopes. Despite its lush appearance, Oki is a demanding environment where plants cannot easily settle.
Yet, this harshness and the history of being connected to the continent during the Ice Age transformed Oki into a world-class ecosystem. The symbol of this is the Oki Cedar. While cedars vanished from much of Japan during the Ice Age, Oki remained a “refugia” (shelter) thanks to the humidity provided by the Tsushima Warm Current. Carrying genes from tens of thousands of years ago, these cedars are living time capsules. Here, plants from the north and south coexist in a way that should be impossible. You can find Hamanasu (Rugosa Rose), typical of Hokkaido, blooming alongside Nagoran (Sedirea japonica), an orchid from Okinawa. This mysterious blend is only possible due to the unique climatic conditions that protected the cedars.
Human Life and Prayer, Starting with Obsidian
It was not only plants that were drawn to this volcanic land. Since more than 30,000 years ago, people have been captivated by Obsidian. Born from rapidly cooled lava, Oki’s obsidian is exceptionally pure, creating edges sharper than a razor. For prehistoric humans, it was the “cutting-edge technology” of survival and a symbol of wealth. People crossed the rough seas in dugout canoes to reach this “black gemstone.” A vast trade network stretched from Oki to as far as Russia and Kyushu, proving that Oki has been connected to the world since ancient times.
Later, Oki became a crossroads of continental culture and a treasure trove for the Imperial Court, providing delicacies like abalone. Sovereigns like Emperor Gotoba were exiled here not just because it was remote, but because it possessed the profound history and maritime routes worthy of hosting royalty. While many records have been lost over time, the answers remain in the festivals and rituals that continue today. The dances of Kagura and the chants of the people are living testimonies of 30,000 years of history.
